Working with the RMAN command

I'm working with Oracle9 on linux9. While giving the RMAN command, say $rman, and then entering, there is no response. Do you know what is going on?
You should get an "RMAN>" prompt. The first thing I would do is to verify that the ORACLE_HOME, PATH, and LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variables are set correctly. If that does not fix the problem, I would recompile the Oracle binaries. Shutdown your databases on that server. In $ORACLE_HOME/bin, you should see a "relink" utility. Relink all of your binaries by performing the following:

relink all

If that does not fix your problem, then you might want to reinstall the RDBMS software.
