What is causing the hang during export and startup/shutdown?

Can anybody tell me how to find out what's going on in the background (both in the OS and Oracle) while export/import and startup/shutdown are happening? I want to try to find out what the session is waiting for and what is causing the hang.

Can anybody tell me how to find out what's going on in the background (both in the OS and Oracle) while export/import and startup/shutdown are happening? I want to try to find out what the session is waiting for and what is causing the hang during export and startup/shutdown. The OS is Sun Solaris 5.9, and the Oracle version is 8i.

Is there any detailed doc that explains the internal workings of both the OS and Oracle during processes such as these? Thanks all for the help.

The first place I'd look is the V$SESSION_LONGOPS view. This view can show you what the long running session is working on and when the current step will be completed.

You could be waiting on certain events to complete as well. Query V$SESSION to see if you can identify the session performing the export/import. You will need the SID for this session. Then query V$SESSION_WAIT to see what the session is waiting on. If you are consistently waiting on the same event to occur, then you have identified the bottleneck.
