Using DBUA to migrate platforms in Oracle 9iR2

We currently have Oracle 9iR2, 9.2.0.3.0, 64 bit running under Solaris 9 on Sun servers. The new servers are Penguin machines running RH 3. Is there a way to use the DBUA and have the upgraded version be produced on the new servers? Or does the DBUA work only on the same server?

Nope. If you want to migrate platforms, there are two main options:

  1. Build a new database on the target platform, export from the source, and import into the new target
  2. Upgrade the source to 10g, then follow procedures to migrate the database files to the new platform, taking advantage of the new feature to allow transportable tablespaces across platforms. It's well-documented in the 10g docs.

I haven't seen any trends yet since the choice for most people is largely dependent on the size of the data that needs to be moved. I don't know of any disadvantages of option two except that you have to learn something new.
