Upgrading to Oracle 10g Release 2

Oracle expert Brian Peasland explains how to upgrade to Oracle 10g Release 2, with export/import utility.

Can I upgrade my database, which is running on Oracle 8.0.6, directly to Oracle 10g r2, with export/ import utility? My database size is 60 GB.
Yes you can. First, take an export dump with the Oracle 8.0.6 exp utility. Perform a full database export:

exp userid=system/manager file=full.dmp full=y

Next, precreate your 10g database. Also precreate any tablespaces you will need. Then import the dump file's contents using 10g's imp utility:

imp userid=system/manager file=full.dmp full=y log=imp.log

I always log my import session's output to a log file so that I can check for errors.

For more information on upgrading your database, go to http://tahiti.oracle.com and click on your database version. Then look for the Upgrade Guide. It will go through this upgrade scenario as well as others.
