Upgrading from Oracle 7.3.4 to 10g

What is the easiest way to upgrade from Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 10g? Are there any direct upgrade tools/scripts provided by Oracle? If so, are there any risks, and what are they?

Unfortunately, there is no direct migration path available from Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 10g (either release 1 or 2). You must first upgrade your 7.3.4 database to 8.1.7.4, and then you can upgrade to Oracle 10g. How you upgrade depends on many factors – disk space, physical memory on the server, etc. You could upgrade the database in place, or you could create a new database under a new ORACLE_HOME and perform an export/import to get the database to the new version. A good source of information is the Oracle migration/upgrade documentation on Oracle's Technology Network Web site.

With any upgrade activity there is some risk involved. Since upgrading from 7.3.4 to 10g is quite a leap, I would recommend testing this thoroughly in a non-production environment several times. When you have the upgrade process working smoothly, ensure that the application(s) this database supports are thoroughly tested before this takes place in a production environment.
