TNS protocol error when logging in

I have installed Oracle8i on my PC[p3]. After installation at the time of login I used "scott" as username and...

"tiger" as password, but it is displaying "TNS protocol error." What does it means and how do I solve this? You can get this error message when you are using the DOS version of SQL*Plus. Before you invoke SQL*Plus, type the following:

set ORACLE_SID=my_sid

Use your database's identifier instead of 'my_sid'.

Additionally, you can use Net Manager to create a TNS alias which points to your database. Then, when you connect with SQL*Plus, you will use this TNS alias as follows:

sqlplus scott/tiger@my_tns_alias

By explicitly stating the TNS alias, you are also telling SQL*Plus which protocol to use.
