I need to architect a solution for migrating a legacy Oracle (8) database to a new Oracle (9) database. The databases have completely different data models so it's a migration/transformation effort. We have 250 million transaction rows and 17 million member name/address rows. I need a strategy to handle the large volume. Can you give me some ideas around best practices, tools and techniques to perform such a migration/transformation? Does Oracle have any tools to facilitate fast loading or bulk loading?
One method is to dump the data to a comma-delimited file and then bulk import that data into a table using SQL*Loader. Another method is to use Oracle's export and import utilities to copy the data from one database to another. All of these utilities are discussed in the
Once the data has been moved, you can then use SQL statements to copy the data from the table into the reorganized tables.
