Status of Oracle 8i instances running on Windows 2003

Our Windows NT has been upgraded to Windows 2003. There are two Oracle instances running on this box with version 8.1.6. The services Oracleora and Oracleora show as starting even though I manually started both from SQL*Plus. Does this have something to do with Oracle 8i not being supported on Windows 2003?

Our Windows NT has been upgraded to Windows 2003. There are two Oracle instances running on this box with version 8.1.6. Following the upgrade, the services Oracleora and Oracleora show as starting even though I manually started both from SQL*Plus. Shutting down or starting up the instances doesn't seem to change the status. Does this status have something to do with Oracle 8i not being supported on Windows 2003? Anyway I'm uninstalling this version and going with 9i as a business requirement. I'm assuming when I uninstall everything and go for a bounce of the server, these services may be released. Curious to know the reason for such a service. Thanks.
You have hit on one of the problems with running Oracle 8i on Windows 2003. This is not a supported combination. I have seen difficulties with services and networking when trying to run 8i on Win2003. Going to Oracle 9i or 10g will fix your problem. But you will have to uninstall Oracle 8i completely from the database server.
