Same user for 8i and 9i Oracle homes on same server

I want to install Oracle 8i and 9i on the same server. I want to know if we have to create two different Oracle users for two versions of Oracle in the OS. If we have the same user for both the Oracle homes, then how can we manage the environment settings for the two Oracle homes?

You can install two different Oracle software releases on the same machine with the same user; this is actually common practice. Because you do not indicate what your operating system is, I will assume it is Unix. To manage the user's environment settings you can use an Oracle-provided script called oraenv. Calling this script requires that you pass it a SID, and then the script will set the environment appropriately by setting ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME, PATH and other variables. If you need to also set other non-Oracle environment variables, you can create a custom shell script that calls oraenv, as well as setting other relevant environment variables.
