Running Oracle9i in 32-bit mode

I'm trying to upgrade an 8i database to 9i on an AIX machine but it is 32 bit. Can I run 9i on AIX 5.1 in 32-bit kernel mode? If so, how do I get it installed, linked and working?

It appears your only option for AIX 5L is to install Oracle9i 64-bit. There does not seem to be a 32-bit version of 9.2 available for AIX 5L. Here is a quick overview of a phased migration path:

  • Take a backup of 8.1.7.x 32-bit database in 4.3.3
  • Upgrade AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5L
  • Boot the machine in 32-bit mode
  • Continue to use the 8.1.7.x s/w and database if required

When you plan to upgrade to 9i 64-bit:

  • Backup and shut down 8.1.7 32-bit database
  • Install 9i 64-bit software
  • Upgrade the 8i 32-bit database to 9i release 2 64-bit database using the installer
