Returning result sets

In Oracle, is there any means of returning result sets other than by using OUT / IN OUT ref cursor parameters. Because it seems that is the case with other databases. The JDBC interface for stored procedures namely CallableStatement has a concept of result sets separate from the out arguments, which of course can be cursors.
You can use VARRAY or TABLE data type to return result sets. I have addressed how to use them in one of my previous responses.
