There is a bug reported for Oracle client release 9.0 to 9.2.0.6 that sounds very similar to the issue you are encountering. The fix is to not use NTS authentication (remove the line SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES from the client's SQLNET.ORA file) or apply the 9.2.0.7 patch set.
