I don't have a backup of a nonsystem datafile which was created recently. Can I recover the data?

If you do not have a backup of the datafile, then how can you hope to recover the data in that datafile? There is no way to magically re-create a file's contents. This is why a sound backup and recovery strategy is necessary. I'm sorry, but I cannot help you here.
