Receiving "Oracle is not available" error after restart

When I'm creating a database in SQL*Plus I am able to log in, but if I restart the computer then I get the ORA-1034 error, "Oracle is not available."

I had installed Oracle 8i in Windows XP Professional Edition. When I'm creating a database in SQL*Plus I am able to log in. If I restart the computer then I get the ORA-1034 error, "Oracle is not available." But in services I saw that an associate database service is running. Again if I create a new database then it works. If I restart the computer again I get the same error. Kindly help me.
Are you using the SQL*Plus from the command line or from the GUI? From the command line you will need to use the "set" command to set the SID:
Set oracle_sid=sid_value
Then you should be able to connect.

From the GUI it should use a bequeath-type connection if that is the only database running. However, if it still won't connect, use the Net Configuration Assistant to configure a tnsnames entry for the database and then use that in the GUI.
