I am a new DBA. I have a few question regarding Backup and recovery. I have an Oracle 18.104.22.168.0 database running...
on an HP 9000 machine with Unix version 11.11. Currently, they have an operating system backup set up, but it has not been tested and the Unix admin is not even sure if it is working (they installed Oracle two months ago, and they are testing an application on it). I need to set up a backup and recovery procedure especially for when they go live with their application; this is scheduled for sometime at the end of April 2005.
I have never used RMAN before and I was wondering if it is the best way to backup an Oracel database. If it is, could you please help me with what I need to know and how I should set it up and test it. Thank you so much for all your help.
I've always felt that backup and recovery is the most important thing a DBA does. You can always install software and reconfigure it, but you cannot always recreate data. Backup is useless without recovery and vice versa. So the DBA needs to be well versed in both backup and recovery under many scenarios. This requires testing, testing, and more testing.
RMAN is the preferred method to backup an Oracle database these days. It is able to handle virtually every backup and recovery situation you can find yourself in. If you want an overview of RMAN, I have a paper on my web site (http://www.peasland.net) that gives some notes on setting up RMAN and using it. I would also recommend reading the Oracle documentation. Finally, there is a good book on the market titled, Oracle Backup and Recovery Handbook by Velpuri & Adkoli on Oracle Press. This book discusses the many backup options at your disposal. It covers RMAN and other scripts. It also has many recovery scenarios that can be used to get your database back up and running. You can find this book at Borders and Barnes & Noble bookstores and online at Amazon.com.
