Can you please briefly explain data purging? What technology or method can I use to purge data in Oracle 9i?
Purging could mean many different things, but for most people it simply refers to deleting from a database rows that are no longer needed. You can purge with DELETE statements that have a predicate specifying which rows to delete (DELETE FROM <table> WHERE <condition>). Or, if you know that you will have an ongoing need to purge data and can identify the key column(s) whose values will indicate whether to purge a row, you can partition your tables on the key column(s) in question. Purging then can be accomplished very quickly by dropping partitions.
