Problems with exp utility after migration

I have migrated an Oracle 8i DB to a new build of Oracle 9i by importing and exporting the dump file from the 8i DB. Everything works fine apart from the exp utility. If I try and export "users" I get these errors: "Exp-00056:ORACLE error 31600 encountered" and "ORA-06512." I understand that I may have to run the catpatch.sql script, but I'm cautious because I would like to back up the DB first.

I have migrated an Oracle 8i DB (8.1.5) to a new build of Oracle 9i (9.2.04) by importing and exporting the dump file from the 8i DB. Everything works fine on my new 9i DB apart from the exp utility. If I try and export "users" I get these errors: "Exp-00056:ORACLE error 31600 encountered" and "ORA-06512."

I understand that I may have to run the catpatch.sql script to see if this will resolve the issue, but I'm cautious because I would like to back up the DB before running the SQL script. What would be the best way to back up before running the script?

Probably the easiest way to back up your database, provided it is not very large, is to just shut down the database and copy the datafiles, control files and online redo logs to a backup destination. You can query DBA_DATA_FILES, V$CONTROLFILE and V$LOGFILE for these file locations. Then start your database and apply your patches.
