The ORA-1034 error indicates that your database is not up and running. There are two reasons why this error can be raised. One, the database is down. The solution is to start the database. So ensure that your database is actually up and running. Two, your environment points to the wrong location. In Unix, there are many environment variables that determine which ORACLE_HOME to use, which database identifier (ORACLE_SID) to connect to, etc. The Oracle docs give you information on how to set up environment variables for your specific environment. If you have an incorrect ORACLE_HOME/ORACLE_SID combination, the database won't be found and the ORA-1034 error is raised.
