Planning for migration from 8i to 10g

We are planning a database migration from Oracle8i to Oracle 10g. What is the release date of Oracle 10g Release 1? Is there a 32-bit Oracle 10g Release 1 database available for HP-UX 11.11?

We are planning a database migration from Oracle8i to Oracle 10g. Below are my system details:
Current Database-Platform details
----------------------------------
Platform : HP UX B.11.11 (64 Bit)
Database : Oracle 8i - 8.1.7.4 (32 Bit)

Patches applied on current system
-------------------------------------
Patch No. Details Release date
1. 4193312 MLR on top
           of 8.1.7.4 13-Apr-2005
           for CPUAPR2005

2. 2620726 Buffer Overflow
           in Oracle.exe 17-Dec-2002

3. 2376472 8.1.7.4 patch 17-May-2005
           for Oracle
           data server

Target Database-Platform details
--------------------------------
Platform : HP UX B.11.11 (64 Bit)
Database : Oracle 10g - Release 1 (64 Bit)
I have the following questions:

  1. What is the release date of Oracle 10g Release 1? I need the details (such as 32/64-bit,compatibility with HP-UX 11.11, release date) of all the Release 1 versions, i.e., 10.1.0.1, 10.1.0.2, 10.1.0.3, 10.1.0.4.
  2. Is there a 32-bit Oracle 10g Release 1 database available for HP-UX 11.11? If yes, then what is the release date? And which version?
  3. Is Oracle 10g Release 2 available as 32/64-bit for a 64-bit HP-UX 11.11 OS?
  4. What is the planned release date for Oracle 10g Release 2?
  5. Which of the above mentioned patches have to be applied on the target database (Oracle 10g)?
  6. What are the preparatory steps one must take before migrating from 8i to 10g, apart from nchar and character set considerations? We would be going for the export/import method.
Oracle 10g Release 1 has been available for quite some time; as a matter of fact Oracle 10g Release 2 is now available. To view the compatibility matrix for HP-UX, click here.

With respect to your question regarding the availability of 32-bit versus 64-bit, Oracle 10g is only available in 64-bit for all platforms. Again, the compatibility matrix above will show this.

The best way to prepare for a migration from Oracle8i to Oracle 10g is to read through the Oracle 10g Release 2 upgrade guide located on Oracle's Technology Network Web site. This guide will explain how to prepare for the upgrade, as well as explain the different upgrade options available to you.
