Overriding system name for column primary key

When the designer creates a primary key on a single column, Oracle creates a unique index on that column. I believe this is given a 'system' name. Can this be overridden, perhaps by explicitly creating a named unique index on the same column? Is there any merit in doing so?
If by "the designer" you mean the Oracle Designer, I believe that you can specify a name for the primary key. In my opinion, you should always specify constraint names rather than allow Oracle to assign names, for the sake of clarity.
