When I install Oracle8i on Windows XP and run it for the first time, Oracle runs completely. But when I restart my PC I receive the following SQL message, "Oracle not available." I manually start the SID service ?OracleserviceGURU? but an error create appears, "ERROR 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." What am I doing wrong?
I don't use Windows and Oracle8i isn't supported on Windows XP. I'd check the usual things (event log, alert log, etc) and make sure that your init.ora file is in the proper location (as indicated by the registry settings or in %OH%database if no registry entry overrides it).
When 9i and 10g are both available for free download, I'm not sure why you're choosing to run 8i in an unsupported configuration. I'd download 9i or 10g from otn.oracle.com and maybe you'll have better luck.
