"Oracle not available" error

I have just installed Oracle9i on Windows XP, but when I start SQL*Plus, I get the following errors: ORA-01034: "Oracle not available" and ORA-27101: "Shared memory realm doesn't exist." Please tell me how and where I should make necessary changes to get going.

I have just installed Oracle9i on Windows XP, but when I start SQL*Plus, I get the following errors:

ORA-01034: Oracle not available
ORA-27101: Shared memory realm doesn't exist.

I am new to Oracle and could not correctly follow the solutions provided on the Internet regarding the above errors. Hence, please write to me in detail as to how and where I should make necessary changes to get going.

You did not specify which version of Windows XP you are using. Oracle is only certified to run on the Windows XP Professional version. Oracle may not run on XP Home and there have been many, many problems running Oracle on XP Home. So an OS upgrade may be in the works for you.

After you have installed the Oracle software on your system, you will need to run the Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) to create your database. This will create a service with a name similar to OracleServiceXXXX (where XXXX is your database identifier). If you have already created the database, then ensure that this service is running.

If this service is down, then you will get the above error.
