Oracle not available after restart

I have loaded Oracle8i on a Windows XP system. When I restarted my system I got an error message: "ORA-1034: Oracle not found." I changed the property of all the services of Oracle running in my system to "automatic" but still didn't succeed in running Oracle. I had to create a new database with a different global database name and SID, and whenever I restart my system I need to do the whole process again.

Hi, I have loaded Oracle8i on a Windows XP system. I have successfully loaded Oracle in my system and even worked on it, but when I restarted my system I got an error message: "ORA-1034: Oracle not found." I changed the property of all the services of Oracle running in my system to "automatic" but still didn't succeed in running Oracle. I had to create a new database with a different global database name and SID, and whenever I restart my system I need to do the whole process again, as it shows the same error time and again. By now I have created three global databases and SIDs in my system. Where did I go wrong? Was that an installation problem or something else? I searched on the Internet for a solution and tried all of them but none of them could help me. Please provide me with an exact solution.

Oracle 8i is not certified to run on Windows XP. Only Oracle 9i and 10g are certified on the XP platform, and only XP Professional at that. Oracle does not have any products of any version certified on XP Home.

The most common errors with uncertified Oracle products on XP, or with XP Home, are networking issues. The ORA-1034 error could very well be that your client software cannot communicate with the database. And to make matters worse, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I highly recommend using a certified version. Download Oracle 10g from Technet and make sure you are using XP Pro.
