Oracle not available after installing 8i on WinXP Pro

I have installed Oracle 8i on Window XP Professional. But on restarting my computer I am facing Error ORA-01034: Oracle not available. I tried to check in Administrative tools under that in Services, and there it shows against the service database name as Starting, and I am not able to set or change that mode. Please suggest what I need to do.

The next thing to look at is your Alert log. The Alert log will have a name similar to "alert_{sid}.log". This file should contain error messages indicating why your database will not start up and open for business. You can also check for any ".trc" files generated by Oracle processes. These files should be in the same directory as your Alert log. They may also provide clues.
