ORA-27101 error when copying Oracle database

I'm getting the ORA-27101 error when I try to copy a database.

I'm getting the ORA-27101 error and have tried but can't get it to work at all. I had tried to copy a database and the only thing I've done that's new is to follow this direction: On the old system, go into SQL*Plus, sign on as SYSDBA and issue: "alter database backup controlfile to trace." Did this cause my problem?
The ORA-27101 error is telling you that the database is not up and running. If you are on Unix/Linux, make sure your ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID environment variables are defined correctly so that SQL*Plus can find the Oracle database. If that is correct, then you will need to find out why the Oracle database is not running. Your Alert Log may have clues.

The ORA-27101 is not caused by backing up the control file to a trace file.
