ORA-03113 error when querying table

I was working on an Oracle 8.1.7.2.1 database under Windows 2000 Advanced Server a week ago. Then I upgraded my Oracle DB to 9i Release 2. Everything is working fine, but there is a table "Claimantinvoice_master" in which invoice data is stored. When users query from this table, an error is returned ("ORA-03113: end-of-file on Communication channel").

I have tried my best to resolve this, but to no avail.

Please guide me on how to resolve the issue. I have checked that when the error occurs, no TRACE file or LOG entry is generated in the ALERT.log file.

Thanks in advance.

Those pesky ORA-03113 errors can be very difficult to diagnose, especially when there are no errors reported in the alert log, nor are there any TRACE files generated. Is this table queried through a database link from another database? I have seen this error when accessing a 9.2 database via a database link if the 9.2 database was recently shut down. In that particular case, it was revealed that when cursors are closed in 8i, the connection across the link is also closed; this is not the case with 9i. This difference was causing ORA-03113 errors to appear in the application logs but, much like your case, nothing was recorded in the alert log.

I would suggest opening a TAR with Oracle Support. They can help you set events in your database that will produce a TRACE file when this error is encountered. You can then send the TRACE file to Oracle Support for analysis.
