ORA-01034 logging into Oracle on Windows XP machine

I have installed Oracle on Windows XP. In Windows XP services, the OracleSIDService shows that it is started. But, when I try to log in to Oracle, it is showing, "ORA-01034: Oracle not found." I am not able to figure out what the problem might be. Please suggest something.

It is possible for the service to be running and the database to be down. To ensure that the database is running, issue the following in a DOS window:

  1. sqlplus /nolog
  2. connect / as sysdba
  3. startup

You should see a message indicating that the database is open. If errors are present, you will need to resolve those errors before the database will be available for use.
