ORA-01002 error when trying to describe a table

I recently installed Oracle9i release 9.2.0.1.0 on a Sun 280R Server. I'm trying to describe a table on another Solaris server with Oracle 7.3.4 via dblink, but I have an ORA-01002 error. When I do a select * from cat@oracle7, the results are satisfactory, but not when I do the describe or others requests like a select 'x' from owner.tableX@oracle7.
The problem is that 9i release 2 to v7 connections are NOT supported. You could revert to an earlier 9i release like 9.0.1.3.1 and it would work, but with release 2, you're out of luck. This is well documented and lots of folks have had issues with this very same thing. Oracle basically says the "fix" is to migrate from your v7 database to 9.2 as a direct upgrade from 7.3.4 to 9.2 is supported.
