Does the Oracle SID need be changed to the name of an instance prior to trying to start it via SVRMGRL? If so, will this have any negative impact on a running instance which had been previously identified by ORACLE_SID?
When you invoke SVRMGRL, you will connect to the database pointed to by your ORACLE_SID. So if you have multiple instances running on your server, you will need to change the ORACLE_SID environment variable before starting each one.
If you attempt to start an instance that is already running, nothing will happen. You will receive an error message indicating that the instance is already running, but no harm will come to the instance.
