Need fixes for ORA-4031

I use Oracle 8.1.7.0 and IAS. Sometimes my PL/SQL procedure aborts with ORA-04031 and from there I need to stop the database and Apache (httpd). If I don't do that I can't do anything on the database. Each connection from Apache get the error ORA-4031. Are there some fixes?
Oracle 8.1.7.0 had a known bug with ORA-4031 errors. Typically, the ORA-4031 error means that you do not have enough free space in your Shared Pool. So one would increase the SHARED_POOL_SIZE parameter and bounce the database. This is the first thing you should try. If that does not fix your problem, then you are running into the known bug with Oracle 8.1.7.0 where the instance did a poor job of memory management in the Shared Pool. The fix is to apply the 8.1.7.4 patchset or upgrade to Oracle 9.2.0.
