Being a Unix/Linux guru with storage and backup experience (HP Data Protector, Veritas Netbackup), I need to gain some deeper knowledge about Oracle and RMAN. The books/sites I have seen so far are either too lengthy, or assume a background in databases. Can you point me to a concise tutorial that will help me quickly grasp the Oracle concepts? Preferably by a Unix geek who speaks my jargon.

there is a white paper titled "RMAN Notes." This is a rough paper that I hashed together when learning RMAN. The paper is somewhat dated as I wrote it for the 8i version. There have been a number of changes for RMAN in 9i and 10g. But the paper will get you started.
