Since you are going from one platform to another, you are limited to the Oracle export/import utilities. Precreate the 10g database on HP-UX, take a full export of the Oracle 8 database, FTP the file (in binary mode) to the HP-UX server, and perform a full import. The size of the database will determine the amount of time it takes for an import to complete. The larger the database, the longer the import time required.

One other option is to use Transportable Tablespaces to move the data. In 10g, you can move data with Transportable Tablespaces even across platforms. However, both the source and destination database need to be running Oracle 10g. Since 10g is not supported on the OpenVMS platform, you will not be able to upgrade the source database to this version. This leaves export/import as a viable upgrade path.
