Migrate Oracle database from Windows to Solaris

I would like to migrate a Windows Oracle 8.1.7 database over to an Oracle 8.1.7 instance on Solaris. What would be the best method to do this?

Since you are going from one platform to another, I would recommend using Oracle's export and import utilities for this job. Perform a full export of your database on your Windows platform. Then precreate the database on the Solaris platform. FTP the export dump to your Solaris server (make sure the FTP is in BINARY mode) and perform a full import.

The Oracle Migration Guide has more details on this conversion. You are not migrating to a new version here, but the concept is still the same. In fact, you might want to take this opportunity to migrate to a fully supported version of Oracle at the same time you do the conversion!
