Is it necessary for the instance name to match the database name?

Is it necessary for databases not supporting RAC or OPS to have the instance name the same as the database name? I tried changing them at installation time but it still kept them the same.

It is not necessary for both to be the same if you are not running RAC/OPS or Advanced Replication.

To change the instance name, modify the INSTANCE_NAME parameter in your initialization parameter file. To modify the database name, you'll have to dump your control file to trace, and modify the control file to have the following as your first line:

CREATE CONTROLFILE set DATABASE "newdbname" RESETLOGS .....
