Index tablespace growing to 99.5%

I have an index tablespace that is growing to 99.5% with AUTOEXTENT = ON. Could you please explain how an index tablespace is growing because I thought since this is an index tablespace, it won't grow; only data tablespace grows. Is that good to have this tablespace at 99.5%? How can I make it better?
As rows are added to tables, entries for those rows are added to indexes on the table, so an index tablespace will grow along with the data tablespace. Having a tablespace 99.5% full is not so great; even with autoextend, Oracle will have to be extending the file frequently, which can affect performance. Better to allocate some new data files for the tablespace so that there is sufficient room for growth over the next few months, at least.
