How to backup from Oracle

How do I take a backup from an Oracle database?
Backup and recovery are two very important topics to the DBA. While you can reinstall and reconfigure the database, it may be impossible to recreate your data. So I would highly recommend practicing solid backup and recovery techniques for your Oracle database. I provided this answer in an earlier Ask The Expert question. Without redoing all of that work, I'll point you to the following URL:

I would also highly recommend that you purchase a copy of the "Oracle backup & recovery handbook" by Velpuri & Adkoli on Oracle Press. It covers this in much more detail. And the Oracle documentation is a must read as well!
