File permissions when doing an RMAN backup

Oracle expert Brian Peasland explains why an error message may be related to file permissions.

I am configuring RMAN in two servers, one catalog and one target. I am not facing any problem in configuration, but when I fire Rman> backup database plus archivelog, I am getting following error:

RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of backup command at 01/17/2008 10:38:30
ORA-19504: failed to create file "/ora0/disk1/oradata/hawk/bkup_piece_c1_0hj6d78g_1_1"
ORA-27040: skgfrcre: create error, unable to create file
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory

I have checked and the directory already exists, having read and written permission. There is also free space available. What might be the problem?

While the directory exists and you have write permissions to the directory, do you have write permissions to the parent directories? You will want to check that. Otherwise, as the Oracle user, verify you can create any file in that directory. This looks like a file permissions issue.
