Error with PLUSTRACE role

I would like to tune SQL statements using the SQL*Plus command Set Autotrace Traceonly. The DBA already created the PLAN_TABLE for the schema abano (my user name). He also created the PLUSTRACE role and granted the role to my username. However when I try to use the command I get the error:
SQL> SET AUTOTRACE TRACEONLY
SP2-0618: Cannot find the Session Identifier. Check PLUSTRACE role is enabled
SP2-0611: Error enabling STATISTICS report
SQL>
He told me that PLUSTRACE role is already enabled. Any help is greatly appreciated.
After logging in, issue the query
select * from session_roles;
to make sure that the role is, in fact, enabled.
