Error when stopping/starting Oracle SID

I tried to stop an Oracle SID in SQL*Plus using the shutdown immediate command and it hung. I then Ctrl-C'd out and now when I try to log into SQL*Plus I get the error: ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress - no operations are permitted. How can I break out of this so I can continue to stop/start my oracle SID?
Fire up SQL*Plus and connect as SYSDBA again. This time, perform SHUTDOWN ABORT followed by STARTUP.
