I run Oracle 8.1.6 on Compaq Tru64 Server. I shutdown the database immediate option. When starting it up I had this error:
"SVRMGR> connect internal Connected. SVRMGR> startup ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area 483508648 bytes Fixed Size 94632 bytes Variable Size 288321536 bytes Database Buffers 131072000 bytes Redo Buffers 64020480 bytes
ORA-01990: error opening password file '/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/dbs/orapw' SVRMGR>"
I tried to recreate a new password file after deletion of the old. But this problem keeps coming up. What should I do?
If all you need to do is to start the database, you can remove the presence of the password file from startup by modifying your INIT.ORA. Simply comment out the REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE parameter. When you attempt to start the database, it will no longer look for the password file.
But you probably want that password file. So you must use the ORAPWD utility to create it. It must have the file name above and be in the above location, otherwise the instance won't find it.
