Database not starting up automatically

I have created my own database with create database XYZ. I have created relevant tablespaces also. Now, when the machine boots the instance of my database, it does not start up automatically. In fact, I have checked all the registry settings, including Oracle_sid and Autostart, and they are set according to my new database but the instance still does not start. I need to know what the problem is, as this does not happens when we install a predefined database when installing Oracle for the first time.
If the service is set to automatic start mode and you created the service using "oradim -new -sid xyz -startmode auto ..." then you should at least see something in the alert log file. If you don't see anything in the alert log file, then make sure you have an init.ora file present at the default location or at the location specified in the registry for your instance.
