DBMS error ora-01034

When I try to log into the DBMS I receive error ora-01034. Oracle was working fine until I appended some 40,000 test records in a single table. After I Inserted records and committed, I exited from SQL Plus, stopped the service, and shutdown the machine. But when I restarted it and tried to log in, I received the error message. Do you know what's going on?
The ORA-1034 error occurs because the database is not running. You have to start your database before you can connect to it.

If you suspect that your database is stopping abnormally, then refer to your Alert Log (located in the BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST directory). The Alert Log will contain clues as to why the database was taken down.
