Connecting database of users' scores on a games Web site

I'm creating a Web site which includes kids games written in java applets. How do I connect a database to record the scores and make them available again to the user?

The simple answer is to use JDBC. This is a set of java routines that provide database connectivity very similar to what Microsoft's ODBC provides for Windows applications.
