Can't connect via client

I have installed Oracle9i in my Windows XP system (laptop). In the same machine I have installed Oracle client(9i). But I am not able to connect to the server through the Oracle client. Do I need to do anything extra?

I will assume that you are using your laptop to create a remote connection to a database server elsewhere. In order to connect remotely to a database, you must have a copy of the tnsnames.ora file in the $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin area of your laptop with an entry for the database that you wish to connect to. The tnsnames.ora file will look similar to this:
ORCL.ANYWHERE.COM  =                    <-- V805 is the service alias,
                                            ANYWHERE.COM is the domain
   (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS =                      <-- section matches LISTENER.ORA
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)              <-- protocol
    (Host = HOSTA.ANYWHERE.COM) <-- Database server host name
                                             or IP address
    (Port = 1521) <-- port the session will connect to
         )
       )
       (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL))     <-- sid = the database sid
    )
You can use the Oracle Net Assistant to configure a tnsnames.ora for you rather than creating one.
