Can I move a SYSTEM tablespace when the database is running?

An Oracle user asks if they can move a SYSTEM tablespace when the database is running.

How can we move a SYSTEM tablespace from one small disk space to a second large disk space (due to space constraints) when the database is up and running? If not, then what is the other way?
The SYSTEM tablespace contains the Data Dictionary. You cannot move this tablespace with the system up and running. You will have to shutdown the database, move the tablespace's datafile(s), STARTUP MOUNT the instance, issue the ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE RENAME command, and then OPEN the instance.
