Best approach for upgrading from 8i to 10g

Later this year we will be undertaking upgrades for a client from Oracle 8i to Oracle 10g on Solaris platforms.

Currently we are running the Oracle 8.1.7.4 Enterprise Edition database product, Oracle Reports Server 2.5 with Apache 2 (compiled independently).

We are not looking to add extra functionality, only a straight upgrade to 10g.

These upgrades will be done in-situ on single servers, i.e., there will be no staging servers used.

Can you advise us on what components of Oracle 10g and IAS we need to install as a minimum, as well as the best approach for upgrading? We have attempted this successfully last year on a test server but we imported an 8i DB to a 10g DB shell. We probably won't have that luxury on some 8i servers requiring the upgrade.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

It would be difficult for me to say which components you should install since I have no information about your environment or which products are currently utilized. The one thought that does occur to me about your upgrade strategy is that you should test this upgrade in your non-production environment in the exact same manner that you are planning to do it in production. You had mentioned testing this by performing an export/import, yet, in production, the plan is to upgrade in place. If the plan is, in fact, to upgrade in place, I would test this several times in a non-production environment. Upgrading from 8i to 10g is a pretty big step so you will want to test the entire process several times if possible.
