Oracle 8i for Solaris is on two CDs. When you run universal installer, the first CD does not eject unless you close the installer. The following is a work-around for this problem.
When the installer asks for the second CD, edit the /etc/mnttab file and find the entry that mounts the CD-ROM. Just place a # sign in front of the line that is used for the CD-ROM, then save the mnttab file.
After this you will be able to eject the first CD and use the second CD without closing the Oracle universal installer.

Geoff H. writes: When installing Oracle 8i you do not have to shutdown the installer. The reason why you cannot eject the CD is because
the server realises a session has a "lock" on the directory. The way around this is to fully path the installer command, ie:
/cdrom/oracle8i_se/runInstaller
The rest is easy -- you can issue eject cdrom whenever required.
Stephen B. writes: The way I get around the problem of needing to eject the CD to put the second cd in is as follows: The first CD will not eject if you have any a graphical file manager or shell window in the directory. Therefore do not start runInstaller from a graphical file manager, use the command line and do not change directory into the CD. If your CD mounts as /cdrom/oracle8i then (and assuming that all environment variables are correectly set):
# cd $HOME
# /cdrom/oracle8i/runInstaller &
This will start the Installer process without locking the CD drive (runInstaller itself doesn't lock the CD drive). The ampersand (&) at the end starts runInstaller as an automonous process so the shell window is available for use. Editing the mnttab file (as suggested in the original tip) should be a last resort, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
