Oracle today announced plans to open up the source code for Oracle TopLink, the database giant's Java persistence framework.
Oracle revealed plans to open source the persistence architecture at the Eclipse Foundation's EclipseCon Conference in Santa Clara, California. Eclipse is an open source community focused on building an open development platform. Oracle, a member of Eclipse since its inception in 1994, also announced that it has ascended to the highest level of Eclipse Foundation membership -- board member and strategic developer.
Oracle executives said they're also proposing that TopLink make up the foundation of a new open source project aimed at providing a comprehensive persistence platform. TopLink offers object-to-relational, object-to-XML and Enterprise Information System access through major standards, including the Java Persistence API, Java API for XML Binding, Service Data Objects and the Java Connector Architecture. Oracle says TopLink works with any database, any application server and any development toolset.
The ultimate goal of the project, said Rick Schultz, vice president of Oracle Fusion Middleware, is to simplify some fairly complex technology for developers and make it easier for them to deploy Java Enterprise Applications.
"Oracle is already leading three Eclipse projects related to Java tooling, including the Java Server Faces project, the BPEL Tooling Project and the Dali Project which is the tooling for Java Persistence API," Schultz said. "This new project that we refer to as EclipseLink would be the first Oracle-led Eclipse runtime project. We view it as a natural evolution of our involvement in the open source community."
Oracle says the new project will aim to provide a set of persistence services that can be used in Java and OSGi (Open Service Gateway Initiative) environments. The company says it will also work with Eclipse member companies and other code contributors to create a set of blueprints that define how OSGi applications can access standardized persistence technologies.
The Eclipse Persistence Platform project will be available free of charge under the Eclipse Public License.
