Wily bridges gap between apps managers and DBAs |

A new tool from Wily Technology Inc. aims to bridge the technological divide between applications managers and database administrators (DBAs).
The Brisbane, Calif.-based company said its new Introscope PowerPack for Oracle Database complements existing database management tools by providing an application-focused view of database performance.
The company said PowerPack for Oracle, an optional add-on for users of Introscope, Wily's flagship Web application management platform, lets IT staff monitor key performance metrics of Oracle 9i and 10g databases to help ensure peak performance of Web applications.
"It allows the guys who are supporting the application to go to the DBA and say, 'We think [the problem] is in the database,'" said Bernd Harzog, CEO of consulting firm Applications Performance Management Experts. "What it does is it mitigates against some of the blamestorming that ordinarily exists in the world of these siloed tools."
Patrick Chang, a Wily Technology product manager, said the key benefit of Introscope and PowerPack for Oracle is that they give applications managers a better view of the IT infrastructure.
"With Introscope they can look at the application, but with PowerPack for Oracle they can look into the database," Chang said. "And more importantly, they can see all those things on the same screen."
Chang said Wily has about 400 Introscope users worldwide and added that PowerPack for Oracle can also produce historical reports of database-to-application activity.
"Introscope and these PowerPack products help you monitor your application, detect problems and alert you to problems hopefully before they reach customers; they help you do triage," Chang said.
The PowerPack for Oracle Database monitors Oracle 9i and 10g databases running on Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris and HPUX, and requires Introscope version 5.3.1 or above.
Wily said a core Introscope implementation starts at $6,250 per CPU. PowerPack for Oracle pricing varies, depending on the number of applications a customer is running.
