Oracle Corp. will introduce its latest RFID technology and announce new RFID capabilities within its E-Business suite at this week's AppsWorld user event in San Diego.

Oracle has invested heavily in a number of new warehouse management applications that can better handle data generated by RFID tags. Due for public release later this year, the warehouse software is designed to leverage Oracle's 10g database to provide management functions for RFID data.

But most Oracle decision makers will head to AppsWorld in search of information related to technology they already own.

Tony Papa, the director of IT development at Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX Transportation, will have migration strategies on his mind as he explores AppsWorld, which opened at the San Diego Convention Center yesterday.

The freight railroad company where Papa works is currently examining its Oracle upgrade strategy and the costs that will be associated with it.

Papa's first stop at the conference will be a session sponsored by the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), he said.

"There's a lot of end-user participation," said Papa, who is a member of the Florida Oracle Applications User Group. "These are people using the products, people coming to AppsWorld with issues they're having. A lot of times people tell what they did to overcome issues."

Oracle expects more than 10,000 users to attend the four-day event. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison will address the crowd Wednesday morning.

Gary Concannon, manager of the business technologies department at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., registered for AppsWorld with hopes of getting information about implementing business intelligence (BI) features within the Oracle manufacturing software his company uses.

"We've implemented some component aspects, and we hope to incorporate more of the reporting aspects," Concannon said.

The user conference gives Oracle users a chance to speak directly to Oracle developers and executives, Concannon said.

"From a management point of view, I'd like to take a look at the strategic direction that Oracle is taking and see if that fits into our strategic plans," he said.

This week marks the first time Oracle executives Jeff Henley and Chuck Phillips will address users since their promotions earlier this month to chairman of the board, and president of the company, respectively. The pair will share a stage to deliver a keynote address Tuesday morning.

"We expect we'll see a high energy level at this conference," said Marc Hebert, vice president of OAUG. "We're seeing our members starting to open up larger projects again after several years of hunkering down so, generally speaking, it's going to be a very interesting event."
